The Shaykh : to something else, intending a bad deed, so He turns his heart toward a good deed, or the reverse. He mentions that a Bedouin was asked, "By what did you know your Lord?" He said, "By the turning of intentions," meaning that Allah is the One who constantly turns intentions. A person always intends something and resolves upon it, but then his intention turns to something else without an apparent cause. Who turned it? It is Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Therefore, the Turner of Hearts is Allah, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-A'raf 7:186] [Al-A'raf 7:178] No one can turn the heart of another person, so the Turner of Hearts is Allah. This is a description that is not valid for anyone but Allah. If someone were to say, "Does not a person intend something, and then another person comes and advises him, showing him the correct direction he sees, and then he changes?" We say, yes, but who made him change? It is Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Perhaps he is advised many times but does not change. All matters are in the hand of Allah. Then the author cited the saying of Allah the Exalted: It could also be the plural of basar (sight), like sabab and asbab (cause and causes), basar and abasar (sight and eyes). But how is the turning of the eyes? The turning of the eyes is by diverting the gaze to acts of obedience or to sins. This is part of the turning of the eyes, refuge with Allah. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is the One who turns the hearts and the eyes. [Al-An'am 6:110] I wish al-Bukhari had brought this. [Al-An'am 6:110] [Al-An'am 6:110] This is a great threat to the person who does not accept the truth when it is first presented to him. If a person does not accept the truth when it is first presented to him, he fears being afflicted with this affliction, which is that his heart will be turned and he will not find guidance to the truth because he rejected it the first time. So, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has made it clear that He turns their hearts and their eyes, and that the cause of this turning is that they did not believe in it the first time. This is also indicated by His saying: [Qaf 50:5] The matter becomes confused for them, and then the path of correctness does not become clear to them. Therefore, it is obligatory for a person, from the moment the truth becomes clear to him, to accept it and act upon it so that he may be guided to another truth. But if he rejects it or hesitates, he is in great danger of being afflicted with this affliction. We ask Allah for safety for us and for you. How sweet is a person's return to the truth! Even if a person returns to the truth, even if it is contrary to what he said before, he finds pleasure in it. Glory be to Allah, he finds great pleasure, and it is as if he did not return from his first statement, because Allah opened his heart when he believed in the truth when it first came. Some people, we ask Allah for guidance for us and for you, try to argue with the statement they made first so that they are not defeated in their own view. But the truth is that they are defeated in their own view if they insist on winning for their statement rather than for the truth. But if he submits to the truth and yields to it, then he is the one who has won. He first wins over himself, and then he is victorious because the truth is with him where he agreed with the truth. [Al-An'am 6:110]
