Commentary on Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim-23b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "And from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), he said:
when God's messenger passed by some graves in Medina he turned his face towards them and said, “Peace be upon you, inhabitants of the graves. God forgive us and you. You have gone before us and we are coming after.” مر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بقبور المدينة فأقبل عليهم بوجهه فقال: السلام عليكم يا أهل القبور، يغفر الله لنا ولكم، أنتم سلفنا ونحن بالأثر
Mishkat al-Masabih 1765
Ahmad and al-Tirmidhi narrated it, and he said: A good, strange hadith"

The Shaykh : The variation in these wordings indicates that the matter is broad regarding supplication. If a person supplicates with appropriate supplication, whether with this wording or that wording or this wording, all of it is permissible, all of it is a recommended practice, yes.
The reader: "It is also established from him that eight years after the Battle of Uhud, he went out to the martyrs and prayed for them as he prays for the deceased. And Abu Dawud narrated from Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said".

The Shaykh : The intended meaning here is that he prayed for them as he prays for the deceased. The apparent meaning, and Allah knows best, is that he supplicated for them, meaning he supplicated for them like the supplication for the deceased, and it is not the known prayer performed over the deceased before his burial, because the martyrs are not prayed over, but rather supplication is made for them.
The reader: "And Abu Dawud narrated from Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished burying the deceased, he would stand over him and say: Seek forgiveness for your brother and ask Allah for steadfastness for him, for he is now being questioned. كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا فرغ من دفن الميت وقف عليه فقال : استغفروا لأخيكم وسلوا له التثبيت، فإنه الآن يسأل
.
And a hadith was narrated, which Ibn 'Abd al-Barr authenticated, in which he said:
No man passes by the grave of a man he knew in this world and greets him, but Allah returns his spirit to him until he returns the greeting. ما من رجل يمر بقبر رجل كان يعرفه في الدنيا، فيسلم عليه إلا رد الله عليه روحه حتى يرد عليه السلام
.
And a hadith was narrated regarding instructing the deceased after burial, which has some issues, but some of the early people of Sham acted upon it, along with narrating it, so most of our scholars and others recommended it. This and similar matters are among what was "

The Shaykh : The correct view is that it is a weak hadith that does not serve as a proof. Instructing the deceased after death, meaning after burial, the hadith is very weak from Abu Umamah
That a person stands over the grave and says: O so-and-so, son of so-and-so, by his mother's name, remember what you left this world upon, the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. أن الإنسان يقف على القبر ويقول : يا فلان بن فلانة باسم أمه، اذكر ما خرجت عليه من الدنيا شهادة أن لا إله إلا الله وأن محمد رسول الله
and the rest of the hadith is mentioned, but it is weak and does not serve as a proof. The correct view is that one stands over the grave, seeks forgiveness for him, and asks Allah for steadfastness for him, yes.
