Allah the Exalted said:
(41) Indeed, those who disbelieve in the message after it has come to them... And indeed, it is a mighty Book. (42) Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy. إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِالذِّكْرِ لَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ وَإِنَّهُ لَكِتَابٌ عَزِيزٌ * لَا يَأْتِيهِ الْبَاطِلُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَلَا مِنْ خَلْفِهِ تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ حَكِيمٍ حَمِيدٍ
[Fussilat 41:41-42]
Indeed, those who disbelieved in the Reminder when it came to themإنَّ الذين كفَرُوا بالذكر لَمَّا جَاءَهم
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 25:780
This is a summary confirmed by
Indeedإنَّ
, and the intended meaning of al-dhikr (the remembrance) is the Noble Qur'an, as Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
And this [Qur'an] is a blessed message which We have sent down وهذا ذكرٌ مبارك أنزلناه
[Al-Anbya 21:50]
And He the Exalted said:
And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people وإنه لذكر لك ولقومك
[Az-Zukhruf 43:44]
The Qur'an was named "dhikr" (remembrance) because it reminds its owner of the good for the righteous and the evil for the arrogant, and because it is a "dhikr" for its owner, meaning that Allah raises his mention, the mention of the one who holds fast to it. For this reason, He said:
And indeed, it is a remembrance for you and your people وإنه لذكر لك ولقومك
[Az-Zukhruf 43:44]
, and because it reminds the human being of his Lord, for the closest of people to Allah, or among the closest of people to Allah, is the one who recites His Book. For this reason, we say: reciting the Book is the best of absolute dhikr (remembrance). As for the specific dhikrs that are restricted by a specific thing, these are secondary to what they are restricted by. And His saying:
when it came to them لَمَّا جاءهم
means: when it came to them. And know that
Lammaلَمَّا
comes in the Arabic language in several ways, among which is: that it be an adverb of time, as in this verse, so the meaning of
When it came to them.لما جاءهم
is: when it came to them. And among them is that it comes as a negating particle that requires the subjunctive, but it is for the expectation of what follows it, like His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He:
Rather, they have not yet tasted My punishment. بل لَمَّا يذوقوا عذاب
[Sad 38:8]
Lammaلما
Here it means
Lamلم
, so it is a negator, but it does not enter except upon something expected, so the meaning of
they have not yet tasted the punishmentلما يذوقوا عذاب
is: they did not taste it, but they are deserving of it, and the punishment is near from them. And among them is that it comes with the meaning of
Exceptإلا
, like His saying, the Exalted:
There is no soul but that it has over it a protector. إن كُلُّ نفس لَمَّا عليها حافظ
[At-Tariq 86:4]
meaning: except upon it is a Guardian. And among them is that it comes as a conditional particle, like His saying, the Exalted:
And when the bearer of good tidings arrived, he cast it over his face فلَمَّا أنْ جَاء البشير ألْقَاه على وجهه
[Yusuf 12:96]
Whenفلما أن جاء
This is a conditional particle, and you say: "Lamma zaraani akramtuhu" (When he visited me, I honored him), so these are four ways for what [such is the case]: the first way: an adverb of time, second: a negating particle that requires the subjunctive, third: with the meaning of
Exceptإلا
, fourth: a conditional particle.
When they came لَمَّا جاءهم
means: when it came to them, they did not mention Allah the Exalted. The news of
Indeedإن
was deleted in order for the soul to go in estimating it in every direction, meaning: that the human being remains [wondering] what will happen to him, so you find the human being hoping and thinking thus or thus or thus. For this reason, the exegete estimated it by saying: "We will reward them", so "We will reward them", according to the author's interpretation, is the news of
Indeedإن
. And it is permissible to estimate other than this; you can say: those who disbelieved in the remembrance, when it came to them, will be punished, or for them is the Fire of Hell, or something similar. The important thing is that its deletion is in order for the mind to go in every direction in estimating the news. But we know with certainty that it cannot be estimated as a good news, meaning it is not possible for us to say: the estimation is: those who disbelieved in the remembrance, when it came to them, for them are Gardens of Pleasure. This is impossible. Rather, it is estimated in whatever punishment you estimate. And this is of the eloquence of the Qur'an, that it makes the matter open for the human being to estimate it in every estimation. He said: "
And indeed, it is a mighty Book. وإنه لكتاب عزيز
[Fussilat 41:41]
fortified "
And it is indeed a Bookوإنه لكتاب
Allah Mighty and Majestic confirmed the honor of this Book with two confirmers:
Indeedإن
and the lam (definite article). And the point of interest in reality is not
Bookكتاب
only; the point of interest is His saying:
Azizعزيز
This is the important thing. As for
Bookكتاب
, everything that is written is a book. Yes,
(29) She said, "O eminent ones, indeed, to me has been delivered a noble letter. (30) Indeed, it is from Solomon قالت إني ألقي كتاب كريم * إنه من سليمان
[An-Naml 27:29-30]
but the point of interest is His saying:
Azizعزيز
,
And it is indeed a Book وإنه لكتاب
The pronoun in
Indeed, heإنه
refers to the dhikr, which is the Qur'an, and
Bookكتاب
here means written, and it is written in the Mushafs, in the Preserved Tablet, in the scrolls in the hands of the angels. Did you understand? So it is a book in three places: in the Preserved Tablet, second: in the scrolls in the hands of the angels, and third: in the scrolls in our hands. And His saying:
Aziz عزيز
The author said: "fortified" And there is no doubt that
inviolableمنيع
is among the meanings of
Azizعزيز
, but it is more general than what the author said
nobleعزِيز
: meaning fortified, i.e., it is impossible for anyone to reach it with evil except that Allah exposes him. Second:
Azizعزيز
meaning dominant, so the Qur'an is without doubt dominant over others, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion هو الذي أرسل رسوله بالهدى ودين الحق لِيُظهِرَه على الدين كله
[At-Tawbah 9:33]
So it is dominant over everything. So it is impossible for anyone to reach it with evil except that Allah exposes him, and second: that it is dominant. For this reason, when the Muslim community held fast to it, it was dominant; it toppled the thrones of Kisra and Caesar and others of the tyrants, and the East of the earth was opened by it
