The Lawfulness of the First Adhan on Friday
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: My brother M. A. J. from Egypt says: I have observed in your country, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, that there are two adhan calls for Friday prayer, and this is incorrect, for when the imam used to ascend the pulpit, a single adhan was called before him, and all the books of the Sunnah support this.
So I hope you will refer this matter to the competent authorities, such as the Department of Islamic Research and Ifta, headed by His Eminence Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Baz, so that Allah may establish the truth and invalidate falsehood.
A: Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, his Companions, and whoever follows their guidance. As for what follows:
The matter is as the questioner stated. In the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), there was a single adhan along with the iqamah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered for the sermon and the prayer, the mu'adhdhin would call the adhan, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would deliver the two sermons, and then the iqamah would be called for the prayer.
This is the known matter established by the Sunnah, as the questioner said, and it is well known among the people of knowledge and faith. Then, when the people increased in number in Medina during the caliphate of the Rightly Guided Caliph 'Uthman ibn 'Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), he saw fit to add a third adhan, which is called the first adhan, in order to alert the people that the day is Friday so that they may prepare and hasten to the prayer before the customary, well-known adhan after the sun passes its zenith. The Companions present in his time followed him in this, and among them were 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) , 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf, al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam, Talhah ibn 'Ubayd Allah (may Allah be pleased with them) , and other prominent and senior Companions. The Muslims continued to follow this practice in most cities and lands, following the action of the Rightly Guided Caliph (may Allah be pleased with him) , and the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph, 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) , followed him in this, as did the rest of the Companions.
The point is that this occurred during the caliphate of 'Uthman and after, and the majority of Muslims in the cities and eras continued with it until this day. This was adopted based on the Sunnah practiced by 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) , which was an act of independent legal reasoning (ijtihad) on his part and an advice to the Muslims, and there is no harm in it. This is because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani), and he is one of the Rightly Guided Caliphs (may Allah be pleased with him) . The public benefit in this is apparent. Therefore, the people of the Sunnah and the community adopted this and saw no objection in it, as it is part of the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs 'Uthman and 'Ali, and the Companions who were present at that time (may Allah be pleased with them all).
So I hope you will refer this matter to the competent authorities, such as the Department of Islamic Research and Ifta, headed by His Eminence Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Baz, so that Allah may establish the truth and invalidate falsehood.

You must then follow my sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs. Hold to it and stick fast to it.
