The Ruling on Offering the Recitation of the Noble Qur'an to the Spirit of the Messenger ﷺ

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is the ruling on offering the recitation of the Noble Qur'an to the Messenger ﷺ or to others?

Answer:
Offering the recitation of the Noble Qur'an to the spirit of the Messenger ﷺ and to the dead has no basis and is not prescribed. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) did not do it, and the good lies in following them. Also, the Messenger ﷺ is given a reward equal to ours for the good we do, so he has a reward like ours; because he is the one who guided us to it, peace and blessings be upon him. He said, peace and blessings be upon him:
One who guides to something good has a reward similar to that of its doer.من دل على خير فله مثل أجر فاعله
Sahih Muslim 1893a
He is the one who guided his Ummah to good and directed them to it. So if a person reads, prays, fasts, or gives charity, the Messenger is given a reward like the rewards of these people from his Ummah; because he is the one who guided them to good and directed them to it, peace and blessings be upon him. So there is no need for recitation or anything else to be offered to him; because that has no basis, as mentioned earlier. And he ﷺ said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
Likewise, recitation for the dead also has no basis, and it is obligatory to leave that off.
As for charity on behalf of the dead Muslims and supplication for them, all of that is prescribed, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said in describing His righteous servants who follow the righteous Salaf:
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faithوَالَّذِينَ جَاءُوا مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ
[Al-Hashr: 10]. And Allah prescribed the funeral prayer for supplicating and seeking mercy for them. Likewise, charity on behalf of the deceased benefits him, as the authentic hadiths from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ confirm this. Likewise, Hajj on their behalf, 'Umrah, and paying off their debts, all of that benefits the deceased Muslim.
