The Honorable Director of Shuqra General Hospital: A. A. H. (may Allah preserve him).
Greetings of Islam, and after: I kindly request that you present my case to the Grand Shaykh, Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, personally, after informing him that Ramadan is approaching. I am a person suffering from the illnesses detailed in the report above. I find myself constantly thirsty and cannot do without carrying water with me, even for a very short distance. I cannot digest food except in very small amounts. I become exhausted when the stomach empties of food in a short time, approximately one hour after eating. I also become exhausted when I eat, and I become exhausted at the slightest misunderstanding, which leads me to the emergency room. It is known that the doctors advise me to maintain a permanent diet excluding proteins, fats, acids, and spicy foods, and have only allowed me a small amount of nutritious food. I am a man who fears Allah the Exalted. One of the Muslim doctors told me to break my fast in Ramadan and to feed a poor person for each day, but I was not convinced except by the fatwa of the honorable Shaykh, the father, Abdul Aziz ibn Baz. I kindly request that you give me his legal rulings. May we not be deprived of you.

Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and after:
Based on the report mentioned above regarding the condition of the aforementioned 'Umar, I issue a fatwa to the aforementioned 'Umar that he may break his fast in Ramadan as long as fasting is difficult for him, and he must make up the fasts if Allah heals him; because of His saying, the Exalted:
So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysفَمَن شَهِدَ مِنكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[al-Baqarah: 185]. May Allah heal him from all evil and guide everyone to what pleases Him.
Said by the one who is poor in need of the forgiveness of his Lord, Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, Grand Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and President of the Committee of Senior Scholars, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
