Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The chapter on spending from what is obligatory and from what is pure":
After mentioning (may Allah have mercy on him) the obligation of spending on the wife and on relatives, he mentioned that it is befitting for a person to have high aspirations, and to spend from the purest of his wealth and from what he loves of his wealth. There is a difference between the purest and what is loved. Generally, a person does not love anything but the purest of his wealth, but sometimes his heart attaches to something of his wealth that is not the purest. If he spends from the pure, which is loved by the general people, and from what he himself loves, even if it is not the purest, that is evidence that he is sincere in what he deals with Allah. For this reason, charity is called charity (sadaqah), because it indicates the sincerity of the one who gives it. So a person should spend from the pure, from the purest of his wealth, and he should spend what he loves, so that he is sincere in prioritizing what Allah the Mighty and Majestic loves over what his soul desires.
Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) cited as evidence two verses from the Book of Allah, and he said: "And the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love
[Ali 'Imran 3:92]
"
: Al-Birr means great good. From this, the open space (al-bar) is named al-bar. So al-birr is great good, meaning you will not attain great good and you will not attain the rank of the righteous until you spend from what you love.
All wealth is loved, but some of it is more loved than some. So if you spend from what you love, that is evidence that you are sincere, and then you attain the rank of the righteous thereby.
And He said the Exalted:
And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes
[Al-Baqarah 2:267]
: The bad (khabith) of every thing is according to its kind. So the bad of wealth is used for the defective, and it is used for defective earnings, and it is used for the forbidden.
So from its usage for the defective is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes
[Al-Baqarah 2:267]
: This is the rest of the verse, the beginning of which is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth
[Al-Baqarah 2:267]
: And what comes out of the earth, some of it is pure and some of it is defective. He said:
And do not aim toward the defective
[Al-Baqarah 2:267]
meaning: Do not aim for the bad, which is the defective, to spend from it.
while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes
[Al-Baqarah 2:267]
So how do you accept for others to give them the defective when you refuse to take it? This is from the category of arguing with a person by what he acknowledges and admits: that he does not accept to take the defective in place of the pure, so how does he accept to give the defective in place of the pure?
So the bad here means the defective. And from that is also the naming by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of onions and garlic as the bad tree, because they are defective, foul-smelling, and disagreeable. So much so that if a person eats from them and their smell remains in his mouth, it is forbidden for him to enter the mosque, not for prayer and not for other than prayer, because the mosque is inhabited by the angels. So if he enters the mosque, he harms the angels. And the angels are pure, and the pure are for pure things. They dislike the bad of deeds and entities. So if you enter the mosque and you have a foul smell, you harm the angels.
And the man in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), if he entered the mosque and had eaten garlic or onions, they would drive him out to al-Baqi'. Al-Baqi', you know the distance between it and the Prophet's Mosque is far. He is driven to al-Baqi', he does not approach the mosque.
And we regret that some people, we ask Allah for guidance and protection for us and for them, smoke cigarettes or shisha and come to the mosque with the smell of cigarettes and shisha in their mouth or on their clothes, even though this is a foul smell that everyone dislikes. So much so that some people cannot pray next to such people. And it is forbidden for these people to enter the mosque with the foul smells on them.
And likewise, the one who has body odor. Body odor is a foul smell that emanates from his armpits, or emanates from his ears, or emanates from his head and is harmful. So it is not permissible for him to pray as long as the harmful smell is in him. It is not permissible for him to enter the mosque, rather he should stay away.
And praise be to Allah, this is from the misfortunes and calamities. If he is afflicted with such a thing, he does not say: How do I forbid myself the mosque? We say: This is from Allah the Mighty and Majestic. Forbid yourself the mosque and do not harm the people and the angels. And try as much as you can to get rid of this smell, either by complete cleaning, or by putting pleasant smells that cover the foul smell. This can be treated by a person using pleasant smells that cover the foul smell, and the one who smells only smells the pleasant smell.
