The reader: He said -may Allah have mercy on him-: "The chapter on the virtue of hunger, the coarseness of life, and restricting oneself to a little of what is eaten, drunk, and worn, and other desires of the self, and abandoning lusts:
Allah the Exalted said:
(59) But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil - (60) Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all. فخَلَفَ مِن بعدهم خَلْف أضاعوا الصلاة واتبعوا الشهوات فسوف يلقون غيّا * إلا من تاب وآمن وعمل صالحا فأولئك يدخلون الجنة ولا يظلمون شيئا
[Maryam 19:59-60]
.
And He the Exalted said:
(79) So he came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired the worldly life said, "Oh, would that we had like what was given to Qarun. Indeed, he is one of great fortune." (80) But those who had been given knowledge said, "Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for he who believes and does righteousness. And none are granted it except the patient." فخرج على قومه في زينته قال الذين يريدون الحياة الدنيا يا ليت لنا مثل ما أُوتي قارون إنه لذو حظ عظيم * وقال الذين أُوتوا العلم ويلكم ثواب الله خير لمن آمن وعمل صالحا
[Al-Qasas 28:79-80]

And He said:
Then you will surely be asked that Day about pleasure. ثم لتسألن يومئذ عن النعيم
[At-Takathur 102:8]

And He said:
Whoever should desire the immediate - We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished. مَن كان يريد العاجلة عجَّلنا له فيها ما نشاء لمن نريد ثم جعلنا له جهنم يصلاها مذموماً مدحوراً
[Al-Isra 17:18]
, and the verses in this chapter are numerous and well known.
And from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) she said:
Never did the family of Muhammad (ﷺ) eat to the fill the bread of barley for two successive days until ما شبع آل محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم من خبز شعير يومين متتابعين حتى قبض
Sahih Muslim 2970c
, agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And in a narration:
The family of Muhammad had not eaten wheat bread to their satisfaction for three consecutive days since his arrival at Medina till he died. ما شبع آل محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم منذ قدم المدينة من طعام البر ثلاث ليال تباعا حتى قبض
Sahih al-Bukhari 5416

And from Urwah, from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she used to say:
by Allah, I used to see the new moon, then the new moon, then the new moon, i. e. three moons in two months, and fire was not kindled in the house of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ). I ('Urwa) said: Auntie, then what were your means of sustenance? She said: Dates and water. But it (so happened) that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had some Ansar as his neighbours and they had milch animals and they used to send to Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) some milk of their (animals) and he served that to us والله يا ابن أختي إنا كنا ننظر إلى الهلال ثم الهلال، ثلاثة أهلة في شهرين، وما أوقد في أبيات رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم نار، قلت يا خالة فما كان يعيشكم؟ قالت: الأسودان: التمر والماء إلا أنه قد كان لرسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم جيران من الأنصار، وكانت لهم منايح، وكانوا يرسلون إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مِن ألبانها فَيسقينا

And from Abu Sa'id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
That he passed by a group of people who had a roasted sheep in front of them, so they invited him, but he refused to eat and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left this world without being satiated with barley bread. أنه مرَّ بقوم بين أيديهم شاة مصلية، فدعوه فأبى أن يأكل، وقال: خرج رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم مِن الدنيا ولم يشبع من خبز الشعير
