Is it permissible for a believer to wish for death?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
His saying (peace and blessings be upon him) at the time of his death:
O Allah, the highest companionاللهم الرفيق الأعلى
Is this cited as evidence for the permissibility of wishing for death, or is it specific to the Prophet?

Answer:
If one finds its signs, he says: "O Allah, the highest companion," meaning: Paradise, i.e., "O Allah, admit me into Paradise." Even if he were alive, he could say this: "O Allah, admit me into Paradise, O Allah, make me with the highest companion," even if he were in good health.
Q: His saying: "With Your knowledge of the unseen"?
A: This is conditional; it is not an absolute wish: "O Allah, with Your knowledge of the unseen," just as in the hadith:
O Allah! Keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and let me die if death is better for me.اللهم أحيني إذا كانت الحياة خيرًا لي، وتوفني إذا كانت الوفاةُ خيرًا لي
Sahih al-Bukhari 5671
. As for wishing, it is when one says: "My Lord, let me die, I wish I would die," and he makes it absolute. But if he makes it conditional, there is nothing wrong with it.
Q: In al-Nawawi's commentary, is it permissible to wish for death out of fear of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) in the religion?
A: There is no clear evidence for it, and the hadiths are general. So if he says: "O Allah, keep me alive if life is better for me, and let me die if death is better for me," that is sufficient, and praise be to Allah, in times of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and in times other than fitnah.
