The Meaning of Rafath, Fusuq, and Jidal in Hajj
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Allah the Exalted said: [Surat al-Baqarah: 197].
The Shaykh: What is meant by the forbidden rafath, fusuq, and jidal? And does one who argues or goes to the extent of frivolity during Hajj invalidate his Hajj?
Answer:
The scholars of knowledge (may Allah have mercy on them) explained rafath as intercourse and what leads to it, and fusuq as sins. As for jidal, they explained it as quarreling and disputing in something of no benefit, or in what Allah has clarified and made clear for His servants, in which there is no place for argument.
Included in the prohibited jidal are all disputes that harm the pilgrims or damage them, or compromise security, or are intended to call to falsehood or discourage from the truth. However, jidal in the best manner to clarify the truth and refute falsehood is prescribed (mashru') and is not included in the prohibited jidal. None of these three things invalidate the Hajj, except for intercourse only if it occurs before the first tahallul (exiting the state of ihram). However, they diminish the Hajj and the reward, just as they diminish faith and weaken it.
Therefore, it is obligatory for the pilgrim and the one performing 'Umrah to avoid that; in obedience to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and in the desire to complete his Hajj and 'Umrah.
Allah the Exalted said:
Hajj is [during] well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj.
The Shaykh: What is meant by the forbidden rafath, fusuq, and jidal? And does one who argues or goes to the extent of frivolity during Hajj invalidate his Hajj?
