Is it permissible to translate the meanings of the Qur'an into languages other than Arabic?

Question:
A question regarding the permissibility of translating the meanings of the Noble Qur'an into languages other than Arabic?

Answer:
It is permissible due to the pressing need for it; because there is nothing in the scriptural evidence that prevents it; and because it is one of the means of conveying the message of Allah and His Messenger, which is commanded by the Shari'ah.
And because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Zayd ibn Thabit to learn the language of the Jews so that he could translate their books for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This indicates that the act of translation from Arabic and into it is a sought-after matter when there is a need for it, on the condition that the translator is knowledgeable in both languages and trustworthy in this regard.
