How many sa'ys does the one performing tamattu' owe?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
I found in the rites of Hajj from the book of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, to the effect that: the one performing tamattu' owes only one sa'y, like the one performing ifrad and the one performing qiran. He cited as evidence the hadith of Jabir from the narration of Muslim. Is this statement established from him? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

Answer:
Yes, this is found in his rites, may Allah have mercy on him, but it is a weak statement. The correct view is that the one performing tamattu' owes two sa'ys; because it is established from the hadith of A'ishah and Ibn Abbas. The hadith of A'ishah and Ibn Abbas is higher in rank than the hadith of Jabir, and the hadith of Jabir is understood to mean that those who brought the sacrificial animals are the ones who performed one sa'y.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions are the ones who brought the sacrificial animals. As for those who performed tamattu', A'ishah informed us that they performed another tawaf for their Hajj, and Ibn Abbas informed us that they performed a second sa'y for their Hajj, as in Sahih al-Bukhari. The hadith of A'ishah, as in the two Sahihs, takes precedence over the generality of the hadith of Jabir.
Shaykh al-Islam, may Allah have mercy on him, adopted the hadith of Jabir. So, from each person's words, some are taken and some are left, as Malik said: "None of us is free from being contradicted and having his view rejected, except the one in this grave (peace and blessings be upon him)."
It is obligatory for him to perform a second sa'y, as stated by the majority of scholars: Imam Abu Hanifah, Malik, al-Shafi'i, and Ahmad in his Musnad. They all say that two sa'ys are necessary, based on the hadith of Ibn Abbas and A'ishah. This 'Umrah was completed by its sa'y, and then the Hajj came with its own distinct acts.
