The Book of Virtues: Chapter on the Virtue of Reciting the Qur'an.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And if the son of the husband's brother who is a resident travels with his father's wife, there is no harm in that, because she is a mahram (a relative one may not marry) to him. As for what some of the common people think, that if a man saves a woman from destruction, he becomes a mahram to her, this has no basis. That is, some people say: if a woman drowns and then a man comes and saves her, or if a fire breaks out in the house and a man comes and saves her, some of the common people claim that he becomes a mahram to her. This is not correct and has no basis. The mahrams are seven by blood relation, seven by milk kinship, and four by marriage. As for the husband, it is well known that he is a mahram because he is her husband. And success is from Allah.
The reader: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
He said -may Allah have mercy on him-: "The Book of Virtues: Chapter on the Virtue of Reciting the Qur'an:
From Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Recite the Qur'an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. اقرؤوا القرآن فإنه يأتي يوم القيامة شفيعًا لأصحابه
Sahih Muslim 804a
Narrated by Muslim.
And from al-Nu'man ibn Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
The Qur'an and its people who applied it, will be brought on the Day of Resurrection preceded with Surat Al-Baqarah and Surat Al-'Imran arguing on behalf of those who applied them. يُؤتى يوم القيامة بالقرآن وأهله الذين كانوا يعملون به في الدنيا ، تَقدُمُه سورة البقرة وآل عمران، تحاجان عن صاحبهما
Riyad as-Salihin 992
Narrated by Muslim"
.

The Shaykh : The author -may Allah have mercy on him- said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "The Book of Virtues": Virtues is the plural of virtue. Then he began with the virtues of the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and said: "Chapter on the Virtue of Reciting the Qur'an": The Qur'an that is in our hands is the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. He spoke with it, Glorified and Exalted is He, in true speech that Jibril heard, and then Jibril recited it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Allah the Exalted said:
(192) And indeed, the Qur'an is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds. (193) The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down (194) Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners - وإنه لتزيل رب العالمين نزل به الروح الأمين على قلبك لتكون من المنذرين
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:192-194]
, and He said: It was revealed to your heart, because the heart is the place of consciousness, perception, and understanding.
that you may be of the warners - لتكون من المنذرين
[Ash-Shu'ara 26:194]
, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur'an. لا تحرك به لسانك لتعجل به
[Al-Qiyamah 75:16]
: And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), due to his intense eagerness for the Qur'an, would rush to Jibril. Jibril would recite to him and teach him, and the Prophet would rush to recite it. So Allah the Exalted said:
Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur'an. لا تحرك به لسانك لتعجل به
[Al-Qiyamah 75:16]
: meaning, be silent until Jibril finishes.
(17) Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation. (18) So when We have recited it إن علينا جمعه وقرءانه فإذا قرأناه
[Al-Qiyamah 75:17-18]
: meaning, Jibril, who is the messenger of the Lord of the worlds to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), recited it.
So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation. فإذا قرأناه فاتبع قرءانه
[Al-Qiyamah 75:18]
meaning: he recites it after him.
Then upon Us is its clarification [to you]. ثم إن علينا بيانه
[Al-Qiyamah 75:19]
meaning: do not interrupt Jibril in his recitation. So this Qur'an is what Allah, Exalted and Majestic is He, spoke with, and He speaks with it, Glorified and Exalted is He, whenever He wills to reveal it, as He said, Exalted is He:
Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband قد سمع الله قول التي تجادلك في زوجها
[Al-Mujadila 58:1]
: And this sentence is a past-tense sentence, meaning it is a past action:
He has heard قد سمع
: it indicates that the speech of this woman preceded the speech of Allah, Exalted is He, in her story and affair:
Certainly has Allah heard the speech of the one who argues with you, [O Muhammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allah. And Allah hears your dialogue; indeed, Allah is Hearing and Seeing. قد سمع الله قول التي تجادلك في زوجها وتشتكي إلى الله يسمع تحاوركما إن الله سميع بصير
[Al-Mujadila 58:1]
, and He said, Exalted is He:
And [remember] when you, [O Muhammad], left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle وإذ غدوت من أهلك تبوئ المؤمنين مقاعد للقتال
[Ali 'Imran 3:121]
: This is regarding Uhud. He says:
when you, [O Muhammad], left your family إذ غدوت من أهلك
[Ali 'Imran 3:121]
: So the coming (to the battlefield) preceded the speech of Allah, Exalted is He, here. So Allah, Exalted and Majestic is He, speaks whenever He wills, with what He wills, however He wills. And it is not permissible for us to say that the speech of Allah, Exalted is He, is like our speech, meaning that His voice in the Qur'an is like our voices. No, but He speaks with the letters that we speak with. So this Qur'an that is in our hands is the letters from which we form our speech, and it is the speech of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in meaning and wording. It is all the speech of Allah. This is what the Book, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Salaf and the imams of the people of the Sunnah indicate: "That the Qur'an is the speech of Allah, and that it was revealed from Him, and that Allah spoke with it in truth, and that Jibril received it from Him, and then it was revealed to the heart of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)". Allah the Exalted said:
(19) [That] indeed, the Qur'an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger (20) [Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position], (21) Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy. إنه لقول رسول كريم * ذي قوة عند ذي العرش مكين * مُطاع ثَم أمين
[At-Takwir 81:19-21]
: So he is trustworthy, I mean Jibril (peace be upon him). It was revealed to the trustworthy of mankind. Jibril is the trustworthy of the angels, and Muhammad is the trustworthy of mankind, and both are trustworthy regarding the revelation of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.
This Qur'an has great virtues: general virtues and virtues in specific verses and chapters. For example, al-Fatihah is the seven repeated verses and it is the Mother of the Book. Ayat al-Kursi is the greatest verse in the Book of Allah, and so on. There are verses or chapters that have specific virtues. As for the Qur'an in general, it also has general virtues. And this obligates us to strive with utmost effort to recite the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, night and day. Because if a person recites the speech of Allah, he gets ten good deeds for every letter. Every letter. One letter of a word has ten good deeds in it. For example:
Say قل
this has twenty good deeds because it is two letters, the qaf and the lam.
I seek refuge. أعوذ
: this is four letters with forty good deeds. Meaning, a great reward that a person cannot imagine if he reads this noble, great Book, which is:
Falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it; [it is] a revelation from a [Lord who is] Wise and Praiseworthy. لا يأتيه الباطل من بين يديه ولا من خلفه تنزيل من حكيم حميد
[Fussilat 41:42]
.
And a person should, when he recites the Qur'an, proceed slowly in it, and not rush in a way that causes some of the letters to be dropped. For some people recite it rapidly until some of the letters are dropped. This is not reciting it as it was revealed. It is necessary to clarify the letters, but the tajwid (the rules of Qur'anic recitation) that is defined in the books of tajwid is not obligatory. The tajwid that is defined in the books of tajwid is not obligatory, but it is part of perfecting the beautification of the voice. The obligatory thing is not to drop a letter from the letters, or a shaddah (emphasis) from the shaddahs. As for the known rules of tajwid, they are in the category of beautification and perfection, and not in the category of obligations. For this reason, the statement that tajwid is obligatory, and that whoever does not beautify the Qur'an is sinful, is weakened. And this is a very weak statement. Rather, it is said: the matter of the Qur'an is, praise be to Allah, clear and distinct. Do not drop a letter from its letters. As for observing the rules of tajwid, it is not obligatory, but it is in the category of beautifying the voice with the Qur'an.
And know that the Qur'an, when it was first revealed, was revealed on seven letters, not on one letter. Because the people were Arabs from multiple tribes with different dialects. And you know that if one wants to speak in the dialect of another, it is difficult and hard for him. So it was from the mercy of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, that He made the Qur'an on seven letters, each reading in his dialect from among the Arabs. It remained like this in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), all of it, and in the time of Abu Bakr, and in the time of 'Umar. In the time of 'Uthman, the people were reading in their dialects, so there was difference in this. And the Qurayshi language had prevailed over all the dialects after Islam developed and the state became such that all its caliphs were from Quraysh. The Qurayshi language prevailed, the letter of Quraysh prevailed over all the languages. So when the Commander of the Faithful, 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), feared that the people would differ in the speech of Allah, and that these seven letters would lead to discord and conflict, he ordered, may Allah be pleased with him, to unify the Qur'an on one letter, which is the letter of Quraysh, meaning: the language of Quraysh. So he gathered the Qur'an on one letter, on the language of Quraysh, which is what we read with now. Then he ordered the other mushafs (written copies of the Qur'an) to be burned. They burned them so that they would not remain and the people would be fitna'd (tempted) by them. So in that was a great benefit and virtue for the Commander of the Faithful, 'Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), that will not be forgotten. So we ask Allah, the Exalted, to reward him well for the Muslims. And I urge myself and you to recite the Book of Allah. Do not leave the Qur'an. Even if you read it all once a month, or twice a month, or four times a month, or ten times a month. And this is the least of perfection that you memorize it every three days. This is the best of what can be. And if you see, or if it is not feasible for you except once a week, or once in ten days, or once in two weeks, or once in three weeks, or once a month, the important thing is do not abandon the Qur'an. Do not abandon it, because it is the speech of your Lord, Mighty and Majestic. And it does not increase you except light in the heart and insight in knowledge. And success is from Allah.
