The reader: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the obligation of fasting Ramadan:
“From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
قال أبو بكر رضي الله عنه : بأبي أنت وأمي يا رسول الله ! ما على مَن دُعي من تلك الأبواب من ضَرورة، فهل يُدعى أحد من تلك الأبواب كلها ؟ قال : نعم ، وأرجو أن تكون منهم It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Riyad as-Salihin 1217 It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1153a It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sahih al-Bukhari 38 It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim”.
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These hadiths that al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) cited in the book *Riyad al-Salihin* all indicate the virtue of fasting:
Among them is the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan an-Nasa'i 2439Sahih (Darussalam): Sahih al-Bukhari 3216 meaning two types, such as spending dinars and dirhams, or dirhams and goods, or horses and camels, or the like. The important point is that the meaning of “two types” is two categories, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Waqi'ah 56:7] meaning: three categories.
Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) mentioned the gates of Paradise, and in his saying:Sunan an-Nasa'i 2439Sahih (Darussalam): it means that the angels call him from every gate saying: “This is better, this is better, this is better,” meaning: come in with us. This indicates the virtue of spending in the cause of Allah, in jihad in the cause of Allah.
Also in this hadith is that whoever is among the people of prayer will be called from the gate of prayer, whoever is among the people of charity will be called from the gate of charity, and whoever is among the people of fasting will be called from the gate of al-Rayyan. This gate is specific and is called the gate of al-Rayyan. Al-Rayyan means the one that is quenched, because the fasting people become thirsty, especially in the long, hot days of summer, so they are rewarded by naming this gate with what is specific to them: the gate of al-Rayyan.
And his saying: “Whoever is among the people of prayer, among the people of charity, among the people of fasting, among the people of jihad” means whoever abounds in this thing. Otherwise, it is known that one who fasts only without praying does not enter Paradise because he is a disbeliever. But the meaning is that if the Muslims abound in prayer, they will be called from the gate of prayer; if they abound in fasting, they will be called from the gate of fasting; if they abound in charity, they will be called from the gate of charity. In any case, whoever is among the people of Paradise enters Paradise from whichever gate it may be.
The gates of Paradise are eight, and the gates of the Fire are seven. As for the gates of the Fire, Allah mentioned them in the Qur'an:[Al-Hijr 15:44].
As for the eight gates of Paradise, the Sunnah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is authentic regarding them.
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) narrated the hadith of Abu Hurayrah that we are in the process of explaining, Abu Bakr said:: meaning that the one who is called from a single gate does not find it difficult. Will anyone be called from all of these gates? Meaning that on every gate there are angels saying: “O so-and-so, come.” He said: “Yes, it is possible that a person abounds in prayer, fasting, charity, and jihad, and is called from all the gates.” He said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3674Sahih (Darussalam): so Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) will be called from all eight gates, because he (may Allah be pleased with him) was a pioneer in good, and he had a share in every good. Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one day encouraged charity and made it desirable, so 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came—and he loved to precede Abu Bakr, not out of envy for Abu Bakr, but out of love for being first in good—'Umar came with half of his wealth (half of his wealth for charity). When he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he found that Abu Bakr had come with all of his wealth (all of his wealth). So the Messenger said to him: , because Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most eager of the Companions in good, the strongest in faith, and the most firm in believing in Allah and His Messenger.
Then he mentioned other hadiths, all of which indicate fasting, the last of which is his saying in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah:Sahih al-Bukhari 38 The author may mention (if Allah wills) the days on which fasting is recommended, other than Ramadan, and the discussion of them will come later. If that happens, otherwise we will mention them, if Allah wills. And success is from Allah.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the obligation of fasting Ramadan:
“From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever spends two types of wealth in the cause of Allah will be called out from the gates of Paradise: “O servant of Allah, this is better.” Whoever is among the people of prayer will be called from the gate of prayer, whoever is among the people of jihad will be called from the gate of jihad, whoever is among the people of fasting will be called from the gate of al-Rayyan, and whoever is among the people of charity will be called from the gate of charity. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “May my father and mother be your ransom, O Messenger of Allah! Is there any hardship for the one who is called from those gates? Will anyone be called from all of those gates?” He said: “Yes, and I hope that you will be among them.”
And from Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
In Jannah there is a gate which is called Ar-Raiyan through which only those who observe Saum (fasting) will enter on the Day of Resurrection. None else will enter through it. It will be called out, "Where are those who observe fasting?" So they will stand up and proceed towards it. When the last of them will have entered, the gate will be closed and then no one will enter through that gate.
And from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Every servant of Allah who observes fast for a day in the way of Allah, Allah would remove, because of this day, his face farther from the Fire (of Hell) to the extent of seventy years' distance.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.

The gates of Paradise are eight, and the gates of the Fire are seven. As for the gates of the Fire, Allah mentioned them in the Qur'an:
It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated."
As for the eight gates of Paradise, the Sunnah from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) is authentic regarding them.
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) narrated the hadith of Abu Hurayrah that we are in the process of explaining, Abu Bakr said:
O Messenger of Allah, by my father and mother, is there any hardship for the one who is called from one of these gates?
Yes, and I hope that you are among them.
What did you leave for your family? He said: I left for them Allah and His Messenger. 'Umar said: By Allah, I will never compete with him after that.
Then he mentioned other hadiths, all of which indicate fasting, the last of which is his saying in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah:
