The mosque is not permissible for a menstruating woman or one in a state of major ritual impurity

Q: A reader from Riyadh says: A woman had blood discharge while she was inside the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mosque, and she remained there for a short time until her family finished their prayer and she left with them. Does she sin in doing so?
A: If she was unable to leave on her own, there is no blame on her. However, if she was able to leave on her own, it is obligatory for her to hasten to exit; because it is not permissible for a menstruating woman, a woman with post-natal bleeding, or one in a state of major ritual impurity to sit in the mosques. This is based on the saying of the Exalted and Majestic is He: [Surat al-Nisa: 43] and what was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 232Da'if (Al-Albani).
