The ruling on leaving one's residence with one's father due to the smallness of the house and free mixing
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A message was sent from Marsa Matruh in the Arab Republic of Egypt by a listener from there, who indicated his name with the letters (A. A). He says: Among the customs and traditions with us is that the son or sons remain with their father in one residence, even if the sons get married, and even if their financial situation allows for something else. I resided in a separate residence from my father and my brother; so my father became very angry, and the reason for that was the following: I got married, and the house does not accommodate three families at the same time, and my refusal of some customs, such as mixed eating, and the wife exposing herself to her husband's brother. Is there a sin on me for this? And is remaining with the father in one residence something that the Shari'ah requires, and the one who leaves it is in error? I ask for information and guidance, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
If the reality is as you mentioned, the narrowness, and the discomfort from the existence of the bad custom of free mixing in eating without covering; then you are correct in this, and there is no blame on you. It is obligatory for your father not to be angry, and to be pleased with what Allah has prescribed. The Messenger ﷺ says:Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani) Mishkat al-Masabih 3696 And Allah says in His great Book: [Al-Mumtahanah: 12] The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
So if the situation is as you mentioned, the narrowness, the bad custom of free mixing, and the exposure; then you are excused in separating in a separate house. It is obligatory for your father not to be angry and not to be upset. It is obligatory for you to take hold of the truth, and to be upright upon it, even if your father, or your mother, or anyone else is not pleased. The truth is more deserving of being followed, and obedience is only in what is right, not in disobedience. And the father should allow it, and submit to the truth.
And you should use the good, kind manner with your father, with kind words and a good manner, and say to him: O my father! May Allah forgive you, this is something obligatory upon me, and I did it for the sake of the religion. One like you helps me in good, and likewise your brother helps you in good. And sitting with the father in one house is not required, even if it is spacious, so how if it is narrow?!
So it is obligatory for the son, and for every person, to do what is better for his religion. If his remaining with a group harms him in his religion, even if it is his father; then he does not have to remain with them, even with his father and his mother. He must strive for the safety of his religion, and take what pleases Allah of him, even if his father and his mother are angry. Obedience is only in what is right, there is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to the Creator.
And it is obligatory for the father and the mother to be pleased with the truth, and not to be angry for themselves. They should accept the truth from whoever brings it, and ask the people of knowledge about what is difficult for them; so that the people of knowledge guide them to what Allah has prescribed in that matter. We ask Allah for guidance and success for everyone.
