The Ruling on Eating with a Person of the Book and Associating with Him

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A letter reached the program from one of the listening brothers, containing a set of questions. He says: We are, praise be to Allah, Muslims, and we have a Christian brother. Is it permissible to eat and drink with him, or not? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
A Christian is not your brother if you are a Muslim, unless he is your brother by blood. A disbeliever is not your brother. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
The believers are but brothersإِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ
[Al-Hujurat: 10]. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Muslim is the brother of the Muslimالمسلم أخو المسلم
So the Muslim is the brother of the Muslim, and not the brother of the disbeliever, even if he is related to him by blood. He is not his brother in religion, whether he is a Jew, a Christian, a Zoroastrian, a Communist, a Qadiani, or an idolater. All of these are disbelievers; they are not our brothers. Rather, between us and them is hatred and enmity. However, if we are kind to them when they are poor and not at war with us, there is no harm in being kind to them. If they are People of the Book under protection (dhimmis) or non-Muslims granted safe conduct, we are kind to them because of their poverty, and we call them to Islam. There is nothing wrong with that. But they are not our brothers, nor are they our loved ones. Rather, we hate them for the sake of Allah until they are guided. And with this, we are kind to them, we call them to Allah, and we ask Allah for their guidance. All of this is required.
As for if they are at war with us, and there is fighting between us and them, with no treaty of protection or safe conduct between us and them; then we hate them for the sake of Allah, we fight them, we give them nothing, and we do not help them against the Muslims. Rather, we hate them for the sake of Allah, we wage war against them, we cut off the connection between us and them, and we do not help them in any way at all. Rather, helping them against the Muslims is disbelief and apostasy. We ask Allah for safety.
And this Christian, do not take him as a friend, do not eat with him, and do not... But if you are afflicted with him, and he lives with you, or is a guest; there is no harm in eating with him. But do not take him as a friend, nor as a confidant. Rather, take him as an enemy, and one hated for the sake of Allah until he is guided. As for eating with him incidentally due to hospitality, or because he stayed with you in a place of residence due to a temporary circumstance; then you eat with him when necessity calls for it. But you strive to be rid of his companionship and living with him; lest he drag you into his affliction, and lest you be lax in what Allah has made obligatory upon you regarding his status. And Allah is the One to be asked for help. Yes.
