Ruling on Delaying the Fajr Prayer by One Hour After the Adhan
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
People may live with a person who prays, but they delay the Fajr prayer by the amount of one hour. What is the guidance, if you would be so kind?
Answer: It is obligatory for the Muslim man and woman to perform the prayer in its time. Fajr, Maghrib, Isha, Zuhr, and Asr: it is obligatory for the Muslim man and woman to be concerned with performing the prayer in its time, and it is not permissible for either of them to delay it beyond its time. The man adds to this by praying it in congregation; he is required to pray it in congregation in the mosques of Allah. The woman prays it at home because that is better for her. It is not permissible for him or for her to delay it beyond its time. So Fajr is prayed before the sun rises, Zuhr after the sun passes its zenith and before the time of Asr, Asr in its time before the sun turns yellow, Maghrib in its time before the twilight disappears, and Isha in its time before the middle of the night. Both of them are required to perform them in their times.
And it is upon the husband, the man, to pray it in congregation in the mosques of Allah, not at home. And his praying it at home is similar to the enemies of Allah, the hypocrites. Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Nisa: 142].
So it is not permissible for the Muslim to imitate the enemies of Allah, the hypocrites, neither by laziness in prayer and heaviness in it, nor by performing it at home. Rather, he must race to it and perform it with the congregation in the mosques of Allah in its time with the congregation. And the woman is likewise required to perform it in its time and to beware of laziness and heaviness, because this is among the characteristics of the people of hypocrisy.
And it is not permissible to delay Fajr until the sun rises; rather, it must be prayed in its time. And what some people do of delaying it until they get up to work is a great abomination. And some scholars have gone to the extent of declaring as a disbeliever the one who does that and intends it. We ask Allah for safety.
So the obligatory thing is to be cautious and to pray it in its time, and to strive to perform it in congregation, and not to obey Satan in that. And his wife should help him in that by waking him up, admonishing him, and reminding him. And they should take an alarm clock to help them in that, unless they have someone who wakes them up.
So the point is: it is obligatory that the five prayers be performed in all their times. It is obligatory that they all be performed in their times. And with that, it is upon the man to perform them in congregation in the mosques of Allah, by the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Bulugh al-Maram 2:308, and it is established from him in the two Sahihs, may Allah pray upon him and grant him peace, that he intended to burn down the houses of those who lag behind in the congregational prayer because of the magnitude of their crime, and because they are imitating the hypocrites in that.
So the believer must be cautious of that and fear Allah. And the wife, the woman, she must fear Allah and perform the obligatory duty. So the prayer is performed in its time, and likewise the rest of the obligatory duties: she must strive for them. And the man must strive to perform all that Allah has made obligatory upon him. So the prayer in its time, and zakah in its time, and fasting in its time. And likewise, each of them must be concerned with what Allah has made obligatory upon him and beware of what Allah has forbidden, because this abode is the abode of action, and both of them are created for worship. Allah the Sublime says: [Adh-Dhariyat: 56]. They were not created for eating, drinking, and working for what gains the worldly life. No, they were created to worship Allah. They were created to worship Allah. The man is created to worship his Lord, and the woman likewise. So the jinn and mankind, all of them, were created to worship Allah. All of them were created to worship Allah.
And the worship of Allah: it is obeying Him by doing His commands and leaving His prohibitions, with sincerity to Him, the Exalted, and magnification of Him, and truthfulness in that, and following His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and desire for what is with Allah and fear of what is with Him . Thus it is obligatory upon men and women of the jinn and mankind.
