The ruling on seeking refuge with Allah when yawning

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner from al-Qassim (A. S. 'A) asks: What is the ruling on seeking refuge with Allah when yawning, and is there any evidence for this?

Answer:
There is no harm in it; because it is from Shaytan. However, nothing has been transmitted indicating that it is recommended. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that
The yawning as from the devil. So when one of you yawns he should try to restrain it as far as it lies in his power.أن التثاؤب من الشيطان، فإذا تثاءب أحدكم فليكظم ما استطاع
Sahih Muslim 2994
and in the other wording:
let him put his hand over his mouthفليضع يده على فيه
Sunan Ibn Majah 968Da’if (Darussalam)
This indicates that it is from Shaytan. So if one says: "I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan," there is nothing wrong with it. But nothing has been transmitted regarding this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He only commanded holding it in, meaning closing the mouth and not opening it wide, as well as placing the hand over the mouth. All of this is recommended; because when Shaytan opens his mouth wide, he laughs at him. So the Sunnah is to hold it in as much as one can, and to place one's hand over one's mouth. This is the Sunnah. And if one says: "I seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan," there is no harm, if Allah wills.
