Ruling on Making Up Missed Prayers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message received from the listener Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad al-Shamrani from the land of Shamran Bashut. He says: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon the noblest of the prophets and the seal of the prophets. After that: I am sending you this message, hoping that Allah, then you, will present it to the honorable Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz. We tell you, Muhammad: Now, Shaykh Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz is answering your message.
The first question: A discussion took place between two people regarding whether the prayer is made up, so is it made up, knowing that he does not know the number of obligatory prayers that were left?
Answer: If a person intentionally leaves the prayer, he commits disbelief by doing so, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The covenant that distinguishes between us and them is prayer; so whoever leaves it, he has committed Kufr.العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم الصلاة فمن تركها فقد كفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 1079Sahih (Darussalam)
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Between a man and disbelief and shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the abandonment of prayer.بين الرجل وبين الكفر والشرك ترك الصلاة
, narrated by Muslim in the Sahih, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is prayer, and its peak is jihad in the path of Allahرأس الأمر الإسلام، وعموده الصلاة، وذورة سنامه الجهاد في سبيل الله
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
If anyone keeps to it, it will be light, evidence and salvation for him on the day of resurrection; but if anyone does not keep to it, it will not be for him light, evidence, or salvation, and on the day of resurrection he will be associated with Qarun, Pharaoh, Haman, 1 and Ubayy b.
Mishkat al-Masabih 578
. We ask Allah for safety. These are among the great disbelievers and their leaders. So the one who neglects the prayer will be gathered with these people, and that indicates his great disbelief; because if he neglects it due to being occupied with leadership, he resembles Pharaoh, and if he neglects it due to being occupied with ministry and job, he resembles Haman, Pharaoh’s minister, and if he neglects it due to being occupied with wealth and desires, he resembles Qarun, whom Allah caused the earth to swallow him and his house because of his arrogance regarding the truth and his preoccupation with desires, and if he leaves it due to being occupied with transactions, buying, and selling, he resembles Abu ibn Khalf, the merchant of the people of Makkah. So he becomes a disbeliever gathered with these disbelievers. We ask Allah for safety.
So the result is that leaving it is disbelief, so it is not made up. If he embraces Islam and Allah guides him and he repents, he does not have to make up this. This is the correct view. He does not have to make up it or make up anything else, such as fasting and others. If he repents after that, then repentance wipes out what came before it, and Islam demolishes what was before it, as Allah the Exalted said:
Say to those who have disbelieved [that] if they cease, what has previously occurred will be forgiven for themقُلْ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِنْ يَنتَهُوا يُغْفَرْ لَهُمْ مَا قَدْ سَلَفَ
[Al-Anfal: 38]. So the one who repents from leaving the prayer does not have to make it up; because he embraced Islam anew. This is the correct view. Yes.
