Prioritizing dutifulness to parents over Hajj
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This message came to the program from the Democratic Republic of Sudan, Atbarah city. It says: Your brother in Allah, Taj al-Din Ibrahim Ahmad, says: My mother, the elderly woman, passed away in the Sacred Lands after performing the obligatory Hajj. She died in Jeddah while on her way to Sudan on the twenty-third of Dhul-Hijjah. Since that date, I have had the sincere intention to visit the Sacred Lands to perform the obligatory Hajj and to stand at my mother’s grave and send blessings upon her. However, the obstacle preventing me from doing so is that my father is an old man, bedridden and unable to move. He eats and drinks very well, and he is with me in the house. He is always an obstacle to my presence in the Sacred Lands. So, is it permissible for me, from a Sharia perspective, to leave him and come to the Sacred Lands? Knowing that I will stay for some time after fulfilling the obligation in the Sacred Land, what is the opinion of the Sharia and the scholars? Please inform us, may Allah increase us and you in knowledge, and may you remain in the protection and care of Allah?
Answer: You should know, O questioner, that dutifulness to parents is among the most important obligations and the greatest of duties, as Allah the Exalted and Majestic said: [Al-Isra: 23], and He the Exalted said: [Luqman: 14].
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when asked, said:. So, dutifulness to parents is among the most important matters, to the extent that it was prioritized over jihad. Therefore, your staying with your father, being kind to him, caring for him, being gentle with him, and fulfilling his needs, is greater and better than your Hajj and your coming to the Sacred Land. So we advise you, O brother, to stick to your father, be kind to him, and continue to be dutiful to him until Allah heals him or Allah takes his soul. After that, you can proceed to perform Hajj or 'Umrah. May Allah grant us and you success, and may He accept from us and from you.
Answer: You should know, O questioner, that dutifulness to parents is among the most important obligations and the greatest of duties, as Allah the Exalted and Majestic said:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment
وَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًاBe grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيْكَ إِلَيَّ الْمَصِيرُAnd the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when asked, said:
Which deed is best? He said: Faith in Allah and jihad in His cause. It was said: Then what? He said: Dutifulness to parents. It was said: Then what? He said: Jihad in the cause of Allah
أي العمل أفضل؟ قال: إيمان بالله وجهاد في سبيله؟ قيل: ثم أي؟ قال: بر الوالدين، قيل: ثم أي؟ قال: الجهاد في سبيل الله
