He also asks: What is the exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(5) And they who guard their private parts (6) Except from their wivesوَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ ۝ إِلَّا عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمْ
[Al-Mu’minun: 5-6]?
Answer: This is part of the description of the believers in these verses. He, the Exalted, said:
(1) Certainly will the believers have succeeded: (2) They who are during their prayer humbly submissive (3) And they who turn away from ill speech (4) And they who are observant of zakahقَدْ أَفْلَحَ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۝ الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي صَلاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُونَ ۝ وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ اللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ ۝ وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِلزَّكَاةِ فَاعِلُونَ
[Al-Mu’minun: 1-4]. Then He, the Exalted, said: “And those who are guardians of their private parts, except from their wives or what their right hands possess, for then they are not to be blamed. But whoever seeks beyond that, then it is they who are the transgressors” [Al-Mu’minun: 5-7]. So the believer guards his private part from zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) and lewd acts, and he does not satisfy his need except from his wife or his right-hand possession. The wife is known. The right-hand possession is the female slave whom he owns by purchase, or by capture during legitimate jihad, or by inheritance, or by gift. This is the right-hand possession. The female slave whom he owns by legitimate ownership, he may keep her as a concubine and have relations with her as with his wife.
But whoever seeks beyond thatفَمَنِ ابْتَغَى وَرَاءَ ذَلِكَ
[Al-Mu’minun: 7] means that if he seeks to satisfy his desire and need through the private part other than from his wife or right-hand possession, he is a transgressor, meaning he is an oppressor who exceeds the limit. From this, the scholars derive the prohibition of the secret habit (masturbation); because it is a departure from this path, which is self-stimulation by the hand. So it is forbidden, and it has many harms, so this habit is not permissible; rather, it must be fought against and abandoned. It is not permissible for a man to satisfy his desire except from his wife or his right-hand possession in the legitimate manner. Then this need is satisfied in the private part in the front, not in the back. It is not permissible to have intercourse with women in their rear, neither the wife nor the right-hand possession; because this is sodomy. Rather, the wife is to be approached in her front during a state of purity, not during menstruation or post-natal bleeding, but during a state of purity. So it is not permissible to have intercourse during menstruation, nor during post-natal bleeding, nor while she is in a state of ihram, nor while she is fasting an obligatory fast. Rather, the believer must avoid that, and he only approaches her at a time when Allah has made it permissible for him, and she is pure from menstruation and post-natal bleeding, not in a state of ihram, and not fasting an obligatory fast. So he satisfies his desire from his wife and his right-hand possession. It is not permissible for him to approach her in the rear, and it is not permissible for him to satisfy his desire with males, which is sodomy, we seek refuge in Allah. All of this is among the great prohibitions. Rather, he satisfies his need from his wife in her front, and likewise... his right-hand possession, at times other than the forbidden times, such as menstruation, post-natal bleeding, ihram, and obligatory fasting. Yes.
