Question:
With Allah's blessing, we begin this session with a question from the questioner (A. A. J.) from Riyadh. He says: Your Eminence! What is the ruling on using the booklets found at the miqat locations for entering ihram and in the vicinity of the Haram, which contain the supplications for tawaf and sa'y in Hajj and 'Umrah? I read from these during some of the circuits. Please guide me in light of my question, may you be rewarded.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
The writings that are found, containing some supplications or some of the prescribed dhikr, are permissible if a person benefits from them, provided they are prescribed dhikr or prescribed supplications; there is no harm in them. A person, in his tawaf and in his sa'y, supplicates with whatever is easy for him, without overburdening himself. He recites the Qur'an, saying: "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, and His is the praise, and He is over all things competent... Glory be to Allah, and praise be to Allah, and there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah. Glory be to Allah and His praise... Glory be to Allah, the Magnificent... O Allah, forgive me and have mercy on me... O Allah, forgive me and my parents, if his parents are Muslims," and so on.
There is nothing—praise be to Allah—that is strictly required. Whatever is easy for you from the Qur'an or from good supplications, it is all good. And if the writings you found contain no objectionable matter—consult the scholars of knowledge if there is no objectionable matter in them—there is no harm. The matter is broad, and praise be to Allah.
However, it is recommended (mustahabb) for the believer in his tawaf to begin his tawaf by touching the Black Stone. He should kiss it if it is easy for him, touch it with his hand, and kiss it, saying: "Allah is the Greatest," as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did. Then he places the House on his left and circumambulates, increasing in dhikr, supplication, and recitation, praise be to Allah, according to what is easy for him.
And so it is in the sa'y. He begins the sa'y at the starting point of the sa'y and recites: [al-Baqarah:158]. This is better. Then, when he ascends, he says "Allah is the Greatest" three times, praises Allah, and supplicates, repeating this three times while raising his hands and facing the qiblah on al-Safa. And so it is on al-Marwah. He supplicates in between; he supplicates three times with whatever is easy for him of supplication, takbir, dhikr, and supplication, repeated three times while facing the qiblah, on al-Safa and on al-Marwah. And on the path between them, he increases in the remembrance of Allah and in supplication on the path between al-Safa and al-Marwah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did. The matter in this is broad, praise be to Allah. Yes.
