Ruling on Leaving Studies Without the Parents' Consent

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our sister says: I left my studies and my mother is not pleased. Am I sinful?

Answer:
Studies hold great good and significant benefit, and it is obligatory for the Muslim man and woman to learn and gain understanding in the religion; because it is obligatory for the Muslim to gain understanding in his religion and to learn what he cannot afford to be ignorant of. Among the causes of happiness is gaining understanding in the religion, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He upon whom Allah intends to bestow goodness, He confers upon him an insight in religionمن يرد الله به خيرًا يفقهه في الدين
Sahih Muslim 1037a
It is agreed upon as authentic.
So among the signs of good and happiness is gaining understanding in the religion of Allah, gaining understanding in Islam regarding the rulings of the Shari'ah, so that the believing man and woman know what is obligatory upon them and what is forbidden upon them, and so that they worship Allah with insight. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
he who treads the path in search of knowledge, Allah would make that path easy, leading to Paradise for himمن سلك طريقًا يلتمس فيه علمًا سهل الله له به طريقًا إلى الجنة
Sahih Muslim 2699a
.
So it is obligatory for you to learn and gain understanding in the religion, if that is facilitated in good and trustworthy Islamic schools. And if your mother insists on it, that is what necessitates further care and diligence in gaining understanding in the religion; because she wants good and benefit for you, both in this world and the Hereafter. So you should not disobey her in that, except if the school involves free mixing of men and women or contains other matters that harm you in your religion. In that case, there is no blame on you if you leave the studies, even if your mother is not pleased; because the Messenger (peace be upon him) said:
Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.إنما الطاعة في المعروف
Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani)
A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the "Creator.”لا طاعة لمخلوق في معصية الخالق
Mishkat al-Masabih 3696
. We ask Allah to grant you success. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you and guide your steps, and record for you reward and recompense.
