The Ruling on Reciting al-Fatihah After Sending Blessings Upon the Spirit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a caller to the program, Abd al-Halim Uthman from the Yemeni Republic, who says in this question: Is it permissible to recite al-Fatihah after every prayer for the spirit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or is this a religious innovation? And how do we know about innovations, O Shaykh?

Answer:
This is a religious innovation. Reciting for the spirit of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is among the innovations; it has no basis in the Shari'ah. The innovation is doing something that Allah has not legislated. This is worshipping Allah with something that He has not legislated. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
meaning: so it is rejected. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملًا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an errorكل محدثة بدعة وكل بدعة ضلالة
Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani)
So worshipping Allah with something that He has not legislated is called misguidance.
And from this is reciting for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whether specific or general. This is not what Allah has legislated. But you send blessings upon him and say:
Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3370
, O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, O Allah, send blessings and peace upon the Seal of Your Prophets, O Allah, send blessings and peace upon our Messenger Muhammad... and the like of that.
And you say: O Allah, reward him on our behalf with good, just as He was good to us. You say: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon his wives and his descendants, just as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim... and so on. Like this, you increase in sending blessings upon him, (peace and blessings be upon him), and you make du'a for him, praise him, follow his Sunnah, and strive to follow the Sunnah, stand firm upon his religion, and act in accordance with his Shari'ah.
As for reciting for him, Allah has not legislated reciting for him. You do not recite for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but you send blessings upon him, greet him, and make du'a for him. You say: May Allah reward him on our behalf with good, and may Allah multiply his reward and increase his good deeds... and other such good supplications. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
