The eighth question of Fatwa No. ( 8946 ):
Q8: What is the ruling on saying: “al-Fatihah for the soul of so-and-so,” or “al-Fatihah, may Allah facilitate that matter for us,” and then they recite Surat al-Fatihah, or after finishing the recitation of the Qur'an, he says “al-Fatihah” and those present recite it? Likewise, it has become customary to recite al-Fatihah before marriage. What is the ruling on that?
A8: It is a religious innovation (bid'ah) for those present to recite al-Fatihah after the supplication, or after reciting the Qur'an, or before marriage; because that was not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) nor from any of his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
