Question:
Allah the Exalted says:
And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ
[Surat al-Baqarah: 187].

Answer:
The meaning of the verse is, that is, the dawn. He, the Exalted, says:
And eat and drinkوَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا
meaning: O you who fast!
until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to youحَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الأَبْيَضُ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
meaning: the true dawn,
from the black threadمِنَ الْخَيْطِ الأَسْوَدِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
meaning: the night. For this reason, He said after it:
from the dawnمِنَ الْفَجْرِ
He explained that by His saying:
from the dawnمِنَ الْفَجْرِ
meaning: from the dawn.
So it is permissible for the fasting person to eat and drink during the night until the dawn becomes clear to him. When the dawn becomes clear, he leaves off eating and drinking and fasts in Ramadan, and so it is in the other days of fasting.
The dawn is of two kinds: the true dawn and the false dawn. The one intended in the verse is the true dawn that spreads across the horizon, extending and crossing the horizon, and its light increases. This is the true dawn. As for the false dawn, it stands in the east, upright like the tail of a camel, not extending to the south or the north, but remaining upright like the tail of a camel, then it disappears, and then it darkens. This is called the false dawn. Yes.
