The duty of children toward their father who keeps the company of bad companions

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A questioner from Kuwait (A. A. A) says: Your Eminence! My father stays up late with a group of his friends who are not good people until midnight. We are a group of girls, and there is a small child who is ten years old, and my mother is a sick woman. Every time we advise this father about staying up so late, he scolds us and curses us. What should we do with him? We have a righteous neighbor who is the imam of the mosque. Should we inform him about our father’s situation so that he might advise him?

Answer:
His advice is important. He should advise you, and those among the neighbors who know his situation should advise him so that he does not stay up late sleeping over. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked sleeping before the night prayer and staying up late after it. If you inform the neighbor so that he advises him in the context of giving advice, there is nothing wrong with that. Or a relative other than the neighbor can advise him; that is good. However, he should not know that you told him anything, so that there is no ill feeling between you and him. You should suggest to the neighbor, or a relative other than the neighbor, that they advise him about staying up late, but they should not reveal that you informed them. The neighbor, or whoever else it is, should not say that so-and-so told me this and that. It should appear as if he learned it from someone other than you.
The point is: advising him is important, and making du'a for him. You make du'a for him for success in prostration, at the end of the prayer, and in other matters. You make du'a for him: that Allah will guide him, and that Allah will protect him from Satan and from bad companions. This is a required matter. The father has a great right. You make du'a for him that Allah will grant him success, guide him, protect him from the evil of bad companions, and protect him from the evil of his own self and Satan. All of this is good.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
