Question:
We return at the beginning of this episode to the letter of our sister listener (F. H. M.) Al-Mutairi. We presented some of her questions in a previous episode, and in this episode, she has a number of remaining questions. In one of them, she says: I have a brother who is ten years old. He speaks to my mother and uses inappropriate expressions toward her because she orders him to pray and obey Allah. So, I beat him severely, and sometimes I beat him because he does not study his lessons, or because he takes something without my mother knowing about it. Sometimes I burn him with fire. Am I sinful in this action? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
May Allah reward you with good. You are rewarded for your effort, your concern for his rectification, his proper conduct with his mother, and his dutifulness to her. There is no blame on you in disciplining him and beating him until he is upright and until he fulfills what is required of him regarding his mother.
The result is that you are rewarded for beating him until he prays, until he studies his lessons, and until he does not speak to his mother in a way that is not appropriate. All of this, you are rewarded for it. If his father is present, it is obligatory for his father to undertake this task, or his older brother, so that he can assist you in this. If his father fulfills the obligation, that is sufficient for you.
The result is that it is obligatory for his father, if he is present, or his older brother, if he is present, to undertake this. If his mother does it, there is nothing wrong with it. If his mother does not do it, and no one other than you does it, then you are rewarded for it, and may Allah reward you with good. But do not burn him with fire. As for burning with fire, it is not permissible.
If he takes a small amount of money for the needs of children, one should be lenient in this. As for something that may harm the mother, or may habituate him to theft, there is no harm in your beating him a light beating. Do not beat him a severe beating, neither in prayer nor in anything else. A light beating that hurts him and deters him, but does not pose a danger. May Allah bless you. Yes.
