Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: {Indeed, only the scholars among His servants fear Allah}

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We ask for an explanation of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge.إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ
[Fatir: 28].

A: This is a great verse, and it indicates that the scholars of Allah, of His religion, of His great Book, and of the Sunnah of His noble Messenger are the most fearful of Allah among people and the most complete in their fear of Him, Glorified is He. The meaning is: Only the scholars of Allah, who have known their Lord by His names and attributes, recognized the greatness of His right, and gained insight into His Shari'ah, knowing what He has of bliss for those who fear Him and punishment for those who oppose and disobey Him, are the most fearful of Allah due to the perfection of their knowledge of Him, and the most complete in their fear of Allah. At the head of them are the Messengers and Prophets (peace and blessings be upon them), who are the most complete of people in their fear of Allah, Glorified is He, and in their exaltation of Him, followed by their successors, the scholars of Allah and His religion.
They differ in degrees in this matter, and the verse does not mean that others do not fear Allah. Every Muslim man and woman, and every believing man and woman, fears Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), but the fear of Allah varies among them. The more insight a believer has into Allah and the more knowledge he has of Him and His religion, the greater his fear of Allah. And the less knowledge and insight there is, the less the fear of Allah and the less the awe of Him, Glorified is He.
People differ greatly in this regard, even the scholars differ in their fear of Allah as mentioned. The more knowledge increases, the more the fear of Allah increases, and the more knowledge decreases, the more the fear of Allah decreases. For this reason, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures.إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ أُولَئِكَ هُمْ خَيْرُ الْبَرِيَّةِ ۝
[Al-Bayyinah 98:7]
Their reward from their Lord is gardens of Eden, with rivers flowing beneath them, to abide therein forever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is for whoever fears his Lord. [Al-Bayyinah: 7-8] And Allah the Exalted said:
Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَخْشَوْنَ رَبَّهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةٌ وَأَجْرٌ كَبِيرٌ
[Al-Mulk: 13] And there are many verses in this meaning. And success is from Allah.
