The Virtue of Memorizing the Qur'an, Learning It, and Struggling Against Forgetting It

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
May Allah reward you. A message was received for the program from Iraq, sent by one of the brothers there, saying: Ramadan al-Ta'i, Ta'mim Governorate, it seems. Our brother has a set of questions, and we are selecting this one from them. He says:
I often memorize verses from the Noble Qur'an, but after a period of time I forget them. Also, when I read a verse, I do not know whether it is correct or not, and then I discover afterwards that I was mistaken. Please guide us, if you please?
Answer: It is prescribed for you, my brother, to strive to memorize what is made easy of the Book of Allah, and to read it to people of knowledge among the good brothers in the schools or in the mosques or in the home, and to be diligent in doing so. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The best among you is he who learns and teaches the Qur'an.
Sunan Abi Dawud 1452Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
The best of people are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it to people and act upon it. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to some of his Companions:
Would any of you like to go to Batihan—a valley in Madinah—and come back with two large camels, without sin or severing of family ties? They said: O Messenger of Allah! All of us love that. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: For one of you to go out in the morning to the mosque and learn two verses from the Book of Allah is better for him than two large camels, and three is better than three, and four is better than four, and the like of them in camels.
. This clarifies for us the virtue of reading the Qur'an and learning the Qur'an. So you, my brother, should learn and connect with the good brothers in the mosques or in the schools or in the circles for memorizing the Qur'an, so that you benefit, and so that you read with a correct recitation.
As for what happens of forgetting, there is no blame on you. If you forget some of it, there is no blame, for humans forget. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I am only human, I forget as you forget
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1259Sahih (Darussalam)
. And once he heard a reciter reading and said:
May Allah have mercy on so-and-so, he reminded me of such and such a verse which I had dropped.
, meaning: I forgot it.
The point is that a person may forget some of the verses, and it is better to say: I forgot; because it came in some hadiths that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Let none of you say: I forgot such and such a verse, I forgot such and such a verse, rather it is that he forgot
Let none of you say: I forgot such and such a verse, I forgot such and such a verse, rather it is that he forgot.
, meaning: Satan made him forget it, so it does not harm you, my brother.
As for the hadith:
Whoever memorizes the Qur'an and then forgets it will meet Allah while he is a eunuch.
, it is a weak hadith according to the scholars and is not established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And forgetting is not by the choice of the person and is not within his capacity; he may forget no matter who he is.
So the point is that it is prescribed for you to strive and be diligent in memorization, and to seek help from Allah, then from whoever is made easy of the brothers in memorizing what is made easy of the Book of Allah, then to study that and take care of it, and be glad of good.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
