Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: From 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Baz to the honorable brother... May Allah guide him to all that is good, amen.
Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings. After that:
Your noble letter has arrived, may Allah guide you, and the information it contained, namely that you are advanced in age, that you have been struck by the illness of paralysis in half of your body, and that you are unable to fast, and that if you fast the illness becomes severe upon you, up to the last of what you mentioned, and your desire for a ruling was known?
Answer: If the specialized doctors determine that this illness of yours is among the illnesses for which recovery is not expected, then it is obligatory for you to feed one poor person for every day of Ramadan, and fasting is not obligatory upon you. The amount of that is half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the country, whether dates, rice, or otherwise. If you feed him at breakfast or dinner, that suffices.
As for if they determine that recovery is expected, then feeding is not obligatory upon you, but rather it is obligatory for you to make up the fasting if Allah heals you from the illness, by the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:185], and I ask Allah to grant you healing from all evil, and to make what has befallen you a purification and an expiation of sins, and to grant you beautiful patience and the seeking of reward, for He is the best of those asked. And peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
