Ruling on one who broke the fast for several Ramadans due to post-natal bleeding and did not make them up
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return at the beginning of this episode to a message we received from one of our female listeners. She says: Umm Ahmad, Umm Ahmad. We presented part of her questions in a previous episode, and in this episode she has a set of remaining questions, among which is a question about one who broke the fast for several Ramadans due to the state of post-natal bleeding and has not made them up to this day. How should she act? And she asks: Is it sufficient to fast in Rajab? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon whoever follows his guidance.
As for what follows: It is obligatory for one who broke the fast in Ramadan due to post-natal bleeding or menstruation to make up the fast before the next Ramadan arrives; because of the saying of Allah, the Glorious and Exalted: [al-Baqarah:185]. The menstruating woman and the woman with post-natal bleeding are of the same category as the sick person and the traveler; upon them is making up the fast. So when she becomes pure from her post-natal bleeding, and becomes pure from her menstruation, she makes up the fast, and hastening is better. It is not permissible for her to delay until Ramadan; rather, she must hasten to make up what is upon her before Ramadan. There is no harm in her fasting in Rajab or other months, and there is no blame on her if she delays until Sha'ban. Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: .
So it is obligatory for the woman to pay attention to this matter and to hasten to make up the fast before Ramadan, even if done separately, even if distributed; continuity is not obligatory. So she fasts and breaks the fast until she completes it. And if she delays it beyond Ramadan, she must repent from that, and she must make up the fast and feed the poor, feeding one poor person for every day, half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of dates or other staple food of the country for every day, the amount being approximately one and a half kilograms, as expiation for the delay. So three things are upon her: repentance, making up the fast, and feeding for every day; if the delay was without an excuse.
But if she delayed it due to an illness that prevented her from fasting, there is no blame on her. She fasts without feeding, she makes up the fast without feeding, and there is no sin upon her, because Allah says: [al-Taghabun:16] (Glorified and Exalted is He). And it is obligatory for the believing woman to fear Allah, to pay attention to making up what is upon her, and to seek out the times in which she can make up the fast before Ramadan arrives, so that she is free of it before the current Ramadan arrives, which is the one after the Ramadan in which she broke the fast: [al-Talaq:2], [al-Talaq:4]. Yes.
