The Rights of Parents over Their Children

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner: Muhammad (A. K.) says: I have a relative who is very undutiful to his parents. What are the rights of parents over their children? And do you have a word, O Shaykh, for those who have this character toward their parents or one of them?

Answer:
It is obligatory for the son to be dutiful to his parents and to guard against undutifulness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Should I not inform you about the gravest of the major sins
Sahih Muslim 88b
We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! He said:
The major sins are associating others with Allah, disobeying the parents
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3021Sahih (Darussalam)
Thus, undutifulness to parents was made one of the major sins. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Abusing one's parents is one of the major sins.
Sahih Muslim 90a
It was said: O Messenger of Allah! Does a man curse his parents? He said:
one abuses the father of another man, who in turn abuses his father. One abuses his mother and he in turn abuses his (the former's) mother.
Sahih Muslim 90a
So undutifulness to them and cursing in that regard are among the major sins. Therefore, it is obligatory to guard against it.
And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
[Al-Isra 17:23]
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy, and say: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small” [Surat al-Isra: 23, 24]... Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
[Surat Luqman: 14]. So it is obligatory to be dutiful to them, to do good to them, and to thank them, and to guard against undutifulness to them. We ask Allah for well-being. Yes.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you, and may Allah reward you with good.
