The ruling on one who pays more than the obligatory amount in zakah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In the last of this questioner's questions—Abu Muhammad says: I heard during Ramadan someone saying that the obligatory amount in zakah is two and a half percent, and that whoever pays three percent is opposing Allah or opposing Allah and His Messenger. Sometimes I pay more than two and a half percent, and my intention is not to oppose Allah or His Messenger, but rather my intention is the desire for good—if Allah wills. What is your opinion on this?

Answer:
The obligatory amount is two and a half percent, meaning: a quarter of a tenth in zakah, twenty-five per thousand, one thousand out of forty thousand, a quarter of a tenth. This is the obligatory amount. If he wishes, he may give the extra as a voluntary act, and he will be rewarded, and there is no blame on him for that.
As for if he believes that this quarter is not sufficient, and that the Shari'ah is deficient; this is a mistake. The Shari'ah is complete, and praise be to Allah. If he believes that the Shari'ah is deficient, and that he wants more than what Allah has legislated, thinking that the Shari'ah is deficient, this is a great mistake.
As for if he wants to volunteer and increase in the reward, then he is rewarded, and there is nothing wrong with it. So if he owes zakah of one thousand and he gives two thousand—one thousand as voluntary and one thousand as zakah—then he is rewarded, and he has a great virtue and a great reward. And likewise, if he owes five thousand or more and he gives ten thousand, it is all good.
The point is: if the extra is out of a desire for good, and out of mercy for the poor, and he knows that what Allah has legislated is sufficient; then there is no blame, he is rewarded, he is given a reward, and he is protected from harm.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
