The ruling on one who neglects some of the obligatory acts and ritual purity due to advanced age

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner (N. al-Mansur al-Fur'ah) says: An elderly woman prays some of the obligatory prayers and leaves off others, and when she prays, there is ritual impurity on her, and she misses some things. Does she incur any blame for that?

Answer:
If her mind has become disordered, she owes nothing; she is not accountable. If this is because her mind has become disordered, she owes nothing. But if it is not because of her mind, and she is with her, for she may forget something and it is made clear to her, if she is of sound mind and understands, then it is different. But if her mind has become disordered due to old age or illness, or something similar, then Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has lifted the pen from her. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Pen has been lifted from three : from the sleeping person until he awakens, from the minor until he grows up, and from the insane person until he comes to his senses.
Sunan Ibn Majah 2041Hasan (Darussalam)
And whoever has a disordered mind is like a madman, the same. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, may the Shaykh be honored.
Perhaps you, O Shaykh, have a word of guidance for sons and daughters regarding the care of their parents when they are old and weak; because it is observed that some sons and daughters neglect their parents in their old age, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh: It is obligatory for sons and daughters to fear Allah in this, and to be kind to their parents, and to be patient. The parents were patient with them in their youth, and raised them and did good to them. So it is obligatory for the children to fear Allah regarding their parents, and to be kind to them, and to be patient with the fatigue that may occur due to their illness, or the disorder of their minds; patience is necessary. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
[Al-Isra 17:23]
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy, and say: “My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small” [Al-Isra: 23-24], and He says (Exalted and Majestic is He):
Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.
[Luqman: 14].
So it is obligatory to be patient with the parents, to be kind to them, and to bear what may occur of harm. And in the hadith:
Allah’s pleasure results from the parent’s pleasure, and Allah’s displeasure results from the parent’s displeasure.
Bulugh al-Maram 16:21
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Should I not inform you about the gravest of the major sins
Sahih Muslim 88b
We said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said:
The major sins are associating others with Allah, disobeying the parents
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3021Sahih (Darussalam)
And in the authentic hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Abusing one's parents is one of the major sins.
Sahih Muslim 90a
It was said: O Messenger of Allah, does a man curse his parents? He said:
Yes, one abuses the father of another man, who in turn abuses his father. One abuses his mother and he in turn abuses his (the former's) mother.
Sahih Muslim 90a
If his cursing of people is a cursing of their parents, because they curse his parents when he curses their parents, how much more so if he curses them and does wrong to them? The matter is greater. We ask Allah for safety.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
