Question:
The first message in this episode is from one of the female listeners, who says: Umm Muhammad from al-Madinah al-Munawwarah. Umm Muhammad says about herself: I am a woman with six children. I had a debt of fasting equivalent to two months that I did not make up in their proper times. Then I vowed that if I fasted these days, I would fast three days of every month, and I would fast the days of Thursday and Monday of every week. However, a legal excuse sometimes coincides with these days, and also her health cannot bear fulfilling the vow. She asks for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family, and his Companions, and whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
The obligatory duty upon the questioner is to fulfill her vow if the condition she mentioned is met. She must fulfill the vow according to her ability. If she is unable to do so, and unable to fast Ramadan due to her advanced age, she must feed a poor person for each day, just as she feeds a poor person for each day of missed Ramadan fasting. With the ability to do so, this is half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the local staple food, such as dates or otherwise.
As long as she is able, she should fast three days of every month, and fast on Monday and Thursday. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam); and because Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, praised the believers for fulfilling their vows, and He said: : [Surah al-Insan: 7].
The obligatory duty upon the questioner is to fulfill her vow, because it is a vow of obedience. If Monday or Thursday coincides with menstruation or post-natal bleeding, she must make them up afterwards, just as she makes up Ramadan. In Ramadan, one breaks the fast during menstruation and post-natal bleeding and makes it up. Similarly, in the fasting of her vow, she breaks the fast and makes it up. And praise be to Allah. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
