The Ruling on Sadness of the Heart and Tears of the Eye upon Calamity

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says—Your Eminence, the Shaykh—from al-Qasim: Is it permissible to grieve over a child who dies and for tears to appear?

Answer:
There is nothing wrong with sadness and tears of the eye; there is no harm in it. When Ibrahim, the son of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), died, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation.العين تدمع، والقلب يحزن، ولا نقول إلا ما يرضي الرب، وإنا بك يا إبراهيم لمحزونون
Sahih al-Bukhari 1303
So, tears of the eye and sadness of the heart do not harm, whether for a young person or an old one, for a child or otherwise. What is forbidden is raising the voice, wailing, tearing the garment, and slapping the cheeks; this is what is forbidden. As for tears of the eye and sadness of the heart, there is no blame in that.
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He is not one of us (one among the Ummah of Islam) who beat the cheeks or tore the front opening of the shirt or uttered the slogans of (the days of) Jahiliya (ignorance).ليس منا من ضرب الخدود، أو شق الجيوب، أو دعا بدعوى الجاهلية
Sahih Muslim 103a
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have no concern with one with whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern, Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) has no concern with that woman who wails loudly, shaves her hair and tears (her garment in grief).أنا بريء من الصالقة، والحالقة، والشاقة
Sahih Muslim 104a
(Al-Saliqah) is the one who raises her voice upon calamity, and (al-Haliqah) is the one who shaves her hair upon calamity or plucks it out, and (al-Shaqiqah) is the one who tears her garment upon calamity. This is reprehensible. As for tears of the eye and sadness of the heart, there is no blame in them.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
