The Ruling on Weeping at the Time of Calamity and the Warning Against Lamentation

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it forbidden for a mother to weep for the death of her son? And what must she do to be among the believing women who are patient, and to seek reward from Allah?

Answer:
She seeks reward from Allah when the calamity strikes; she seeks reward from Allah. Weeping does no harm, as long as she weeps with tears from her eyes. What is prohibited is the raising of the voice in lamentation. If the eye sheds tears, there is no harm in that, because death comes suddenly and has its effect on the soul. So if a person weeps with tears from the eyes, there is no blame on him. The accountability is for the tongue through lamentation.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when his son Ibrahim died:
The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation.
Sahih al-Bukhari 1303
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah does not punish for the tears that the eye sheds or the grief the heart feels, but He punishes for this (pointing to his tongue), or He may show mercy.
Sahih Muslim 924
and pointed to his tongue, meaning: lamentation.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Among my people there are four characteristics belonging to the pre-Islamic period which they do not abandon: boasting of high rank, reviling other people’s genealogies, seeking rain by the stars, and wailing.
Mishkat al-Masabih 1727
meaning: raising the voice, meaning: weeping over the deceased. And he said:
If the wailing woman does not repent before she dies, she will be made to stand on the Day of Resurrection wearing a garment of pitch and a chemise of mange.
Sahih Muslim 934
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The dead is punished in the grave because of wailing on it.
Sahih Muslim 927b
The danger of lamentation is great; it is not permissible. But tears from the eyes and sorrow in the heart, there is no blame in that. Praise be to Allah. Yes.

The presenter: Praise be to Allah, may Allah reward you with good.
