Causes of the Delay in the Response to Supplication

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Our brother says: When nothing I ask for comes to pass, I get angry and say things about myself and about Allah. For example, I say: "Why, O Lord, do You not respond to my supplication?" and other such words. I ask for guidance on this. And if a person feels that his supplication has not been answered, what is required of him?
Answer: It is obligatory for you, O brother, and for every Muslim, if the response is delayed, to turn to himself and to hold himself to account. For Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is Wise and All-Knowing. He may delay the response for a profound wisdom, so that your supplication increases, so that you display your need to your Lord more, so that you humble yourself before Him, and so that you are submissive between His hands. Through this, you will attain great good and many benefits, and the rectification of your heart and its softness, which is better for you than the need itself.
He may also postpone it for other reasons, (Blessed and Exalted is He). He may hasten it for a profound wisdom. So if the need is delayed, do not blame your Lord, and do not say: "Why, why, O Lord?" Turn to yourself, for your Lord is Wise and All-Knowing. Turn to yourself and look, for perhaps you have some sins and disobedience that were the cause of the delay in the response. Perhaps there is another matter for which the response was delayed, in which there is good for you.
So you do not accuse your Lord, but it is obligatory for you to accuse yourself. It is obligatory for you to look into your deeds and your conduct so that you rectify your affairs, so that you stand firm upon the command of your Lord, so that you worship Him with insight, so that you obey His commands, so that you stop at His prohibitions, and so that you stand at His limits. Then know that He (Blessed and Exalted is He) is Wise and All-Knowing. He may delay the response for a long time, just as He delayed the response of Ya'qub in the return of his son to him, Yusuf, who was a Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
He may delay the response for a profound wisdom. He may give you good that is better than what you asked for. He may avert from you evil that is better than what you asked for. As the hadith came from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
No servant supplicates to Allah with a supplication in which there is no sin and no severing of family ties, except that Allah gives him one of three things: either his supplication is hastened for him in this world, or it is stored for him in the Hereafter, or He averts from him evil equal to it. They said: O Messenger of Allah! Then we will supplicate a lot. He said: Allah is more.
In this hadith, (peace and blessings be upon him), it is explained that Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) may delay the response to the Hereafter and not hasten it in this world for a profound wisdom; because that is better for His servant and more beneficial for His servant.
He may avert from him a great evil that is better for him than the response to his supplication. He may hasten it for him. So you must have good opinion of Allah. You must persist in supplication and insist in supplication, for supplication is very good for you.
It is obligatory for you to accuse yourself and to look into your state, and to stand firm upon the obedience of your Lord. And you must know that your Lord is Wise and All-Knowing. He may postpone the response for a wisdom, He may hasten it for a wisdom, and He may give you in place of your supplication something better than it.
In the authentic hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
One of you is responded to as long as he does not hasten and say: I supplicated and I supplicated, but I did not see it being responded to for me.يستجاب لأحدكم ما لم يعجل فيقول: دعوت ودعوت فلم أره يستجاب لي
So he becomes regretful at that and leaves off supplication. It is not permissible for you to become regretful, and it is not permissible for you to leave off supplication. Rather, stick to supplication, increase in supplication, insist upon your Lord, humble yourself to Him, hold yourself to account, and beware of the causes of prevention, which are sins and bad deeds. Seek the times of response, such as the last part of the night, between the adhan and the iqamah, at the end of the prayer before the taslim, and in the sujud. All of these are among the causes of response.
It is obligatory for you to bring your heart to presence during supplication so that you insist and so that you supplicate with a present heart. It is obligatory for you to have lawful earnings, for unlawful earnings are among the causes of being deprived of the response. May Allah grant everyone success and guidance. Yes.
The presenter: O Allah, amen.
