Ruling on a wife supporting her parents from her own money without her husband's consent
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Two sisters work in an Arab country, and we wanted to give something to our elderly parents in return for their great sacrifices in raising and educating us, as we are their eldest children. So we sent them a sum of money so they could go perform the obligatory Hajj. Unfortunately, this action angered our husbands, despite our not being neglectful toward them or toward our children, and despite the fact that this money is from our personal funds. Allah the Exalted has strongly enjoined kindness to parents. What is the opinion of the religion in this matter? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
Answer: You have done well in this, and it is obligatory for you to be dutiful to them and to treat them kindly by all means. As for your helping your parents with what enables them to perform Hajj, this is a righteous deed, and you are to be thanked for it. It is not permissible for your husbands to object; rather, it is obligatory for them to help and to be pleased with this matter, and to thank you for this deed.
The point is that helping the parents, or anyone other than the parents, from your salaries and your personal money is not something in which the husband has the right to object. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to order women to give charity after the Eid sermon, may Allah pray upon him and grant him peace, so they would give charity, and he would not say to them: "Consult your husbands." Rather, he would order them to give charity and say:Sunan Ibn Majah 4003Sahih (Darussalam) He would order them to give charity and seek forgiveness, and he would order Bilal to take what they offered as charity. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that Maymunah said: And he did not say to her: "Why did you not seek my permission for that?" Rather, he approved her freeing of the slave, but he informed her that if she had given her in charity to her maternal uncles and helped her maternal uncles with her, it would have been greater for her reward, in the context of maintaining family ties. So how much more so with the parents? The parents are greater and more significant.
So the point is that your helping your parents is a required matter and a right upon you, and the husbands should encourage you to do so and agree to it. However, there is no harm in taking the husbands' feelings into account and caring for what pleases the husbands, without being neglectful in what concerns the parents. And the husbands should fear Allah, encourage you to be dutiful to your parents, and not object to it.

إني رأيتكن أكثر أهل النارO Messenger of Allah! Did you know that I freed so-and-so, a slave woman of mine? He said, may Allah pray upon him and grant him peace: "As for you, if you had given her to your maternal uncles, it would have been greater for your reward."
