Is persisting in sins a defect in belief?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it correct to call persisting in sins a defect in belief?

Answer:
If they persist, their sins will not be forgiven. Allah said:
And did not persist in what they didوَلَمْ يُصِرُّوا
[Al Imran: 135]. It is necessary that there be no persistence; the condition Allah set for forgiveness is that one does not persist. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
The five prayers, and Al-Jumuah (the Friday prayer) to Al-Jumuah are atonement for what is between them, as long as the major sins have not been committed.الصَّلواتُ الخمسُ والجمعةُ إلى الجمعةِ كفَّاراتٌ لِما بينَهنَّ ما لم تُغْشَ الكبائرُ
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 214Sahih (Darussalam)
if you avoid the major sins. This corresponds to His saying, Exalted is He:
If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise].
[An Nisa: 31]. So He made the expiation of sins and entering Paradise conditional upon avoiding the major sins.
Q: Who said that the Muslim who persists in sins—and they are major sins—is not called a believer, but is called a Muslim?
A: He is called a Muslim, and he is called a believer, with deficient faith.
