Question:
Many people find it difficult to understand this verse, so we ask you, Your Eminence, to clarify its meaning [Surah al-Ra'd: 39]?
Answer:
The scholars have spoken about this verse and explained its meaning, noting that it encompasses many things, including sins and good deeds. Allah erases whatever He wills of sins and bad deeds, and He preserves what He wills according to the state of the servant. If he obeys Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) and stands firm upon His command, Allah records good deeds for him and erases his bad deeds. And if he repents to Allah, He erases his bad deeds.
Likewise, Allah erases whatever He wills of the legislations and abrogates them, and He establishes what He wills during the time of the Messenger whom Allah sent, just as Allah first prescribed for us to face the Sacred Mosque, and then Allah prescribed afterward that we face the Ka'bah. Allah erases what He wills and establishes from the legislations, the sins, the commands, and the prohibitions.
Some of them said: Thus, some of the conditional destinies, Allah erases what He wills of the conditional destinies and establishes them. As for the destinies in which there is no recourse, regarding which His knowledge has preceded that they will occur, these are not erased; rather, they are fixed. For example, death; no one is safe from death. This is a preceding decree that is inevitable. Likewise, old age is inevitable for one whom Allah has decreed to remain; he must end in old age. And in the hadith: And in the other wording: .
