Answer: They have all erred, both those who were negligent and those who went to extremes. The danger is great for all of them:
As for those who exaggerated, there is fear for them of associating partners with Allah. For this reason, some of them claimed that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) knows the unseen, that he heals the sick, and that he removes distress. So they began to call upon him, and thereby they joined the polytheists without realizing it.
As for the other side, there is fear for them of becoming lax in the Shari'ah, little by little, until it is destroyed.
Therefore, the one who loves him in the proper way is the one who follows his Sunnah without exaggeration or negligence.
