Tayammum in Severe Cold

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
In times of severe cold, when heavy rains are falling, and the time for prayer has arrived while we are in the desert, if we are unable, O Shaykh, to perform ghusl or wudu with water, is it permissible for us to perform tayammum if we cannot find anything to warm the water with?

Answer:
Answer: If you do not find water to warm the water with, and the cold is severe, and you fear for yourselves if you use the water, then there is no harm in performing tayammum. This is because 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) did so when he feared for his life due to the severe cold during the Battle of Dhāt al-Salāsil, where he was the commander. He had a wet dream at night, and the weather was cold, and they had nothing to warm the water with. So he performed tayammum and prayed. When he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he informed him of this. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Did you pray with your people while you were in a state of major ritual impurity?" He said: "Yes." I remembered the saying of the Exalted: "And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is to you Merciful." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent and did not order him to repeat the prayer; he approved of that.
