Ruling on remaining with a wife who does not adhere to prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q336: The questioner says: I had a wife who did not know about prayer, fasting, or religious or marital obligations. However, I taught her everything, but she does not adhere to performing the prayers; in fact, she leaves them off often. She also mocks me when I teach her or order her to pray. What is the ruling on continuing with her, given the difficulty of marrying righteous girls due to the high cost of mahr, which has become a major obstacle?
A336: Continuing with a woman who has these characteristics—she mocks prayer, laughs at the one who orders her to pray, and leaves off prayer—she is a disbeliever, and it is not permissible to remain with her. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Mumtahanah 60:10]. And His saying: [Al-Baqarah 2:221]. So she is a disbeliever; as long as she does not pray, and she mocks prayer and the one who orders her to pray, it is not permissible for you to remain with her. As for your statement regarding the difficulty of marriage, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) makes good things easy, and whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better. The conclusion is that it is not permissible to continue with her in this state, as long as she has not repented to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and has not been consistent in prayer. In that case, she is not a wife for a Muslim, and it is not permissible for a Muslim to hold onto her.
A336: Continuing with a woman who has these characteristics—she mocks prayer, laughs at the one who orders her to pray, and leaves off prayer—she is a disbeliever, and it is not permissible to remain with her. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women
And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even though she might please you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, but Allah invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission. And He makes clear His verses to the people that perhaps they may remember.
