Voluntary Fasting on Behalf of the Deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 16627 )
Q: We hope you will graciously issue a ruling for us regarding the status of one who wishes to fast on behalf of one of his deceased parents or one of his deceased relatives, and this is voluntary fasting, not obligatory fasting .
A: Voluntary fasting is not performed on behalf of the deceased. Rather, one should make du'a for him, give charity on his behalf, offer a sacrifice on his behalf, and perform Hajj and 'Umrah on his behalf. These are the matters that have been transmitted in the pure Shari'ah, and they benefit the deceased if Allah accepts them. As for anything other than this, such as voluntary fasting and the like, there is no evidence for it, so it is not prescribed to do it on behalf of the deceased. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
