Fasting of a Kidney Patient

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 1381 )
Q: I suffered from a kidney disease and underwent two operations. The doctors advised me to drink water day and night, no less than two and a half liters daily. They also informed me that fasting and abstaining from drinking water for three consecutive hours would put me in danger. Should I follow their advice, or should I rely on Allah and fast, even though they insist that I have a predisposition to forming stones? Or what should I do? And if I do not fast, what is the expiation I must pay?
A: If the matter is as you described, and these doctors are skilled in medicine, then it is prescribed for you to break your fast, in order to preserve your health and avert harm from yourself. Then, if you are cured and become able to make up the fasts without hardship, it is obligatory for you to make them up. If the illness or the predisposition to forming stones due to not drinking water continuously persists, and the doctors determine that recovery is not expected, it is obligatory for you to feed one poor person for every day you broke your fast.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
