Making up Ramadan for a kidney patient
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 5085 )
Q: I am a Kuwaiti citizen, 27 years old. I was afflicted by a kidney disease from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and I was ill for two years, so I started dialysis on a machine. The doctors told me I must find one of my brothers to donate one of his kidneys to me. One of my brothers, who is two years younger than me and is 25 years old, donated. The operation was successful, by the will of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). Fasting was prohibited for me until I am required to drink a cup of water every hour. My brother was also prohibited from fasting, and they said that if he tried to fast, it would endanger his life. I have suffered from this illness in a way that no one feels except the one who has it. So, should I fast or not? My brother fasted the past Ramadan and was clearly affected. I told him, "Do not fast," but he refused and fasted. It has been two years since our operation. I ask for an urgent answer. And if I refrain from fasting, what should I do, and how much do I pay per day or per month? May Allah preserve you and grant you success in what is best for Islam and Muslims.
A: If the situation is as described, it is permissible for each of you to break the fast in Ramadan as long as your condition remains so; because Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
If he is able to make it up later, it is obligatory for him to make up what he missed. If he is not able, he must feed one poor person for every day he missed. We ask Allah to heal you both, for He is the All-Hearing, the Responsive. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
