Zakat on the wife's wealth that she lent to her husband and which remains a debt in his liability
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 20929 )
Q: My wife lent me a large sum of money, which is more than one hundred and fifty thousand riyals, as she is an employee, to build our house. I have currently finished the framework, and she continues to lend me money from time to time until the construction is complete. Does my wife have to pay zakah, given that she has not
She has not received anything from me? I inform you that I am unable to repay her until the construction is completed and after I have paid off my previous debts. I also inform you that my salary exceeds five thousand riyals, praise be to Allah, but I am unable to repay my wife except in installments. The question: Does my wife have to pay zakat, when does she pay it, and how does she pay it if I am to repay her in installments? I ask for detail. May Allah reward you with good.
A: Your wife must pay zakat on the debt in your liability to her whenever a lunar year has passed while it is in your liability, if you are able to repay it. However, if you are insolvent and it is unknown whether you can repay it or not, she must pay zakat on the debt when she receives it, for one year. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
